Hello Exiles!

GGG just dropped some big news this morning, about the upcoming Legacy of Phrecia event, and it is going to change how we play Path of Exile’s endgame in an interesting way! Instead of the usual Atlas Passive Skill Tree, you will now be using Idols to customize your endgame content. These Idols slot into a new tab on the Map Receptacle UI and come in three types.

Idols

Instead of allocating passive points, you will now loot and equip Idols. They are tradeable but not modifiable. Idols can be slotted into a new tab within the Map Receptacle UI to modify maps and gameplay mechanics:

  • Magic Idols: Up to two modifiers.
  • Rare Idols: Up to four modifiers.
  • Unique Idols: Represent Keystones from the Atlas Passive Tree.

What Does This Mean for Endgame?

The transition from the Atlas Tree to Idols is quite an interesting change and lets you push boundaries way further than before:

  • Less Deterministic Progression: Specialization now relies on the Idols you find, making the endgame more item-dependent.
  • Easy Customization: Forget respecs. Just swap Idols in and out to adapt to different leagues or content. This system supports loadouts without the inconvenience of skill resets.
  • Pushing Boundaries: Unlike the Atlas Tree’s fixed limits, Idols allow you to stack stats beyond previous caps.

Expect Some Chaos (in True PoE Fashion)

Generally, this new system does offer some interesting possibilities, however, the quality-of-life (QoL) features are limited during this event. GGG even admitted that this system will probably lead to some broken outcomes, so just keep in mind that since this is an experimental feature, it does not have the usual quality-of-life polish. You will need to manage your Idol inventory manually for now. But if this system proves popular, GGG hinted at adding more QoL improvements in the future.

Private League Options Coming Later

Some time after the event has ended, both the Ascendancy Classes and this new endgame mechanic will become available as Private League options, so there is more to look forward to even after the event wraps up.
More details will follow soon, so keep an eye out for the full event details later this week.

In the meantime, you can check out some of the Ascendancy teasers here.

Until next time.
Stay sane, Exiles.
